Denmark: Wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen

‘Wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen. Friendly old girl of a town’ and how very wonderful she is. I really didn’t know what to expect of Denmark’s capital but what I did find was very pleasant. Mr ESLT and I love to spend our birthdays exploring a city and creating memories so for Mr ESLT’s recent birthday we travelled to Copenhagen. The first thing I loved about this city was the fact that it only took 90 to get there from the UK, I hate flying you see but with this flight we had just reached cruising altitude when we started making our decent into the very modern Copenhagen airport. I think we landed at the furthest gate from the exit, so it was a good job our carry-ons are on wheels and we had a monster walk to get out of the place.

Denmark: Visit Carlsberg Brewery, Copenhagen

I love a brewery tour, maybe because I love beer. Yes it’s not lady like and yes it’s full of calories but how nice is a cold refreshing beer on a hot sunny day? So when conducting my research into things to do in Copenhagen I was over the moon to find that there’s the Carlsberg Brewery there and they offer tours. Having been on a number of brewery tours – Guinness in Dublin, Heineken in Amsterdam, Castlemaine XXXX in Brisbane the tickets were booked for this brewery tour before you could say ‘bottle of beer’! Even better was the price which was roughly £10 each and included two pots of Carlsberg each either during or after your self guided tour.

Denmark: Cruising the Canals of Copenhagen

There are numerous canal tours in Copenhagen and I could not recommend doing one highly enough.  Having walked the length and breadth of the city and hopping on and off the site-seeing buses to our hearts content it was great to see the city from another perspective, from the water. There are two places in Copenhagen that you can board one of the cruises, the colourful Nyhavn and where we started from, Gammel Strand. I had pre booked our tickets via Viator for £7.50 each which in my opinion is a bargain. Of course you don’t need to pre book tickets as both ports, for want of a better word, have ticket booths. They run every hour starting at 9.30am from Nyhavn and 10.00am from Gammel Strand and early August when we visited many of them looked full or nearly full. So I’d advise not simply rocking up at the last-minute as you may be left disappoint.

Denmark: Tip Top Tivoli, Copenhagen – What Better Way To Spend a Friday Evening?

When I book a break, trip, holiday, sightseeing adventure whatever you want to call it, I always looks for things that are happening in the area during the duration of our stay. So when I booked our trip to Copenhagen, Denmark for Mr ESLT’s birthday I set about finding out what was going down at the time. It appeared nothing too spectacular was scheduled for our three night stay however I did come across a lot of recommendations to visit Tivoli especially on a Friday evening as there is live music on the main stage. With previous guest artists including Snoop Dogg and Elton John we thought we were going to be in for a treat. I quickly checked the program which is available on Tivoli’s website and saw that the band playing the night that we wanted to visit was a Danish band called D-A-D(?). I’ll be honest neither Mr ESLT or I had ever heard of them but as fans of live music we thought why not, let’s give it a shot. The added benefit of Tivoli was that it was literally a five-minute walk from our hotel.

Denmark: The Best Western Hotel Hebron, Copenhagen

Presents are a thing of the past in the ESLT household, instead we buy each other experiences and memories for our birthdays, Christmases, anniversaries etc. So with Mr ESLT’s birthday coming up I had to get my thinking cap on with regards to where would be an awesome place for him to celebrate it. He loves Germany but as we are visiting Berlin for New Year I thought what about a country he hadn’t visited before (flying through the airport doesn’t count). Then I remembered he had mentioned on more than one occasion that he would love to visit Copenhagen. Perfect.
