England: Top Things To Do During A Weekend In London

Even as Brits we love nothing more than a weekend in London. We live up in rural East Yorkshire and yes we have cities close by, but nothing compares to the hustle and bustle of The Big Smoke. London is super accessible with numerous airports, the Eurostar terminal and direct train routes from all over the country, making it a great destination for a day trip, weekend, or even longer, budget dependant of course. We make the journey at least twice a year and love being tourists in our own capital. Here are a few suggestions, based on what we love to see and do, for making the most of a weekend in London. England: Cracking Codes For Cocktails at The Bletchley, London

Chief Agent 453 provided us with the information we needed to find The Bletchley, the top-secret war room that was to be our evening destination on our recent overnight visit to London. Actually finding the place was our first test of the evening and I must admit, even with Google maps on our side, it was still a struggle. But we found it in the end – a solitary door which led down in to the latest project from Lollipop, a pop up bar based on the history of Bletchley Park and how Alan Turing and his team of cryptographers cracked the Nazi’s Enigma code during World War II. If you are not familiar with the breakthrough check out the Benedict Cumberbatch film – The Imitation Game. Continue reading “England: Cracking Codes For Cocktails at The Bletchley, London”

England: An Asian Taste Sensation at Mango Tree, Harrods, London

We love Asian food, especially Thai. Our love of it stemmed from our three-week honeymoon in Thailand nearly 6 years ago and since then we’ve discovered that finding good authentic Thai food in England can be hard to come by. So when we were invited to the Mango Tree restaurant located in the Food Hall on the ground floor of Harrods, London we could not resist the opportunity to try it out. We reserved a table as we were invited, however it is important to note that the Mango Tree does not take reservations, customers are seated on a first come, first served basis and with only around 20 – 25 seats, peak times do get extremely busy, so you may have a bit of a wait. But if you read on you’ll find out it’s certainly worth it. Continue reading “England: An Asian Taste Sensation at Mango Tree, Harrods, London”

England: 9 Hertford Street – Apartment Stay In The Heart Of Mayfair, London

We visit London on a regular(ish) basis, usually three or four times a year and we always chose a different area every time we do. This is so we can experience different things and places. Also, we have always stayed in hotels. Therefore, when we were invited to stay at 9 Hertford Street, luxury holiday apartments located in the heart of Mayfair, it was a completley different direction for us both in terms of location and accomodation. Firstly, we have never been based in Mayfair so we were excited to explore the local area and secondly, we have never stayed in an apartment in London before, so we couldn’t wait to see what extra benefits staying in one would hold. Gatwick Airport: No1 Airport Lounges

I’ll be honest – I’m a massive fan of budget airlines, it means we can visit loads of wonderful places in Europe for only a few quid, sometimes even less than £10. How could anyone complain about that? In fact we have £9.99 flights booked in a couple of weeks to Hamburg, Germany. It costs us more on the train from our town to the nearest city. When our flight is only a couple of hours or so I can quite happily live without a drink and something to eat. International flights normally offer drinks and food in the price of the ticket, however more and more now are offering a base price ticket which doesn’t include a bag, a seat reservation or refreshments, very much following the principles of budget air travel. We flew to New York last week with Norwegian Air, one of the airlines that offers this service, meaning we could fly there and back for a bargain £260 each! We therefore booked No1 Airport Lounge at Gatwick airport before our journey to ensure that we had the opportunity to have something to eat and drink and relax before the 8 hour flight.
