England: The View from The Shard, London

The Shard up close!
The Shard up close!

The obsession with tall buildings continues…..this time in the shape of The Shard which London’s highest viewing platform at the top of Western Europe’s tallest building. Mr ESLT and I went full on tourist on a recent visit to our capital and did things we’ve wanted to do for ages but hadn’t previously had the chance. Mr ESLT booked tickets for The View from The Shard well in advance and (bless him) he booked them with the added bonus of a glass of fizz (he’s well trained)! I’ll be honest I was worried about booking in advance as a friend of mine has done that twice and both times she visited the cloud was so low over London Town she shouldn’t see a thing! That being said it turns out we were extremely lucky and even though it was December we visited on a crisp, clear winters day! However, if the pesky clouds do spoil your view The View from The Shard promise ‘that if you can’t see at least three of the following landmarks – London Eye, St Paul’s Cathedral, The Gherkin, Tower Bridge and One Canada Square – on the day of your visit, we will issue each member of your party with a ticket to return for free within three months.’ Continue reading “England: The View from The Shard, London”

Australia: DAY 3/3, Great Ocean Road, Victoria (Port Campbell – Warrnambool)

Previously: Day 2/3 – Great Ocean Road, Victoria (Lorne – Port Campbell

DAY 3

Our final day on the Great Ocean Road and what a day it was. The sun was shining, the road was empty and the views were magnificent. We had to be in Warrnambool by lunch time so we got up early, packed our backpacks and hit the road. The first stop we made was 2 minutes after we had set off….we followed the road out of Port Campbell and up back on to the Great Ocean Road the view on the left side of the road of the town below was amazing…….

Our next stop was at The Arch. We pulled over here by accident….but what a lovely accident it was. The Arch is located 6km west of Port Campbell, this naturally sculptured arch stands at 8 metres high. The is a wonderful viewing platform when you can take some cracking photographs from.

Our final tourist stop was at London Arch (formerly London Bridge). In my opinion the London Arch is the second most famous rock formation on the Great Ocean Road after the 12 Apostles and in reality it lived up to the many pictures I had seen of it over the years. This stack was formed by a gradual process of erosion, and until 1990 formed a complete double-span natural bridge. Tourists could walk across the rock formation to the end which would have allowed for fantastic views out to sea and back across the mainland. However, the arch closest to the shoreline collapsed unexpectedly on 15 January 1990, leaving two tourists stranded on the outer part until they were rescued by a helicopter. Rumour has it that the ‘tourists’ where both cheating on their partners and ‘enjoying each others company’ when the collapse occurred. Truth or myth – you decide!

As we pulled in to Warrnambool that lunchtime it dawned on me what I had just done, I had fulfilled a dream. It was quite emotional. I realised there and then I would probably never get the opportunity to repeat the past three days and that was a hard truth to swallow but then I reminded myself that I had been very lucky to have been able to do it in the first place.

One perfect, exciting and fulfilling experience completed, now on to the next……..The Grampians!
